I was talking to a friend this week and he mentioned that he had been talking to someone about being an SES newbie, or virgin so to speak. He remembered that my first year, I had a kind of list of things I learned and thought maybe I should share it to help make the experience easier for new attendees.

So, since SES NY is just around the corner, I thought I would do so today. Mind you this is all just my opinion, but it is what I have learned about SES conferences over the past three years. Hopefully, if it is your first conference, it will help you not feel like you just started your first day of high school. Because I know my first time, felt like that, just like that. Did I mention I was a geek and not in a cool way, in high school ;)?

In fact, if it weren't for my friend who suggested this article, I might have just put my head under the covers and hid away. However, he was my first conference friend and somehow that makes the rest so much easier.
So new to SES NY? Here is what I learned.

Links.. Links... Links.. Links here and links there!

At PubCon this past year, InLinks was the newest link buying platform and though they received a strongly worded letter from Matt Cutts, my guess is that will stop few from giving inLinks a try. But I wonder sometimes, why all this focus on links when there are many things you can do to get a site to rank, straight out of the box without them. Now, I am not saying you can rank well and permanently if no one links to you. What I am saying is, with good on-site optimization, you can make it to the top ten without a single link and a PR of 0 and then you can follow that up with good white hat SEO and SEM and get there without all the fuss of chasing the link and the algo.

Now I know the first people to slam me will be those who say, "have you tried to rank for the PPC...

I just returned from PubCon - ok so I live in Vegas and returning just means driving home, but when I got back to my computer and started reading posts from the conference I started to see many comments on personalization and the future of search and that got me thinking about the subject from a personal level.

While personalized search sounds all warm and gooey, I currently deactivate all forms of obviously tracked search (note the key term there is obvious). Yet despite my attempts...

Matt Cutts September 2, 2008 @ 3:21 pm · Filed under Chrome, Google/SEO

Google SEO guru Matt Cutts said something interesting yesterday, but so far it seems pretty quiet on the blog front, so maybe it went unnoticed or maybe no one cares. However, for me ...
