I have been reading all these positive blogs about the future of the cloud, the cloud is where it is at, the cloud, the cloud, the cloud. Please don't drink the kool-aid folks. I am going to tell you why the cloud, for all its good, has the potential to be so wrong, especially in the case of Google's Chrome OS if this becomes mainstream.
So Why Do You Hate The Cloud?

First let me say, I appreciate the benefits of the cloud for many things. It has many pluses, especially with regards to... >>

I have been running so many thoughts through my mind since returning from SESNY. What to write about? I have been almost paralyzed in the depth and breadth of topic choices. Mostly because it seems that with the plethora of bloggers now, my voice would have been merely a repeat of everything out there. Unfortunately, or maybe selfishly, part of me feels that if I am going to take time to write a blog, I don't want to just repeat what others have written, so what to write about? Then last week it hit me. The sudden evangelism surrounding all things social media. The idea that all is good and those who critique are somehow out of touch, or out of date and while some are, something struck me while reading my Facebook status posts and twitter tweets is social media truly social or does it just provide an illusion of connectedness? While it has many positives, what are its negatives? ....>

Overall, I felt a bit disappointed at this year's event. The sessions on Day 1 and 2 appeared to have little for the SEO attendees and much was a bit too basic. In addition, the charity party was on Monday night which meant that people like me, who had to come in on Tues (or late Mon) the party was out of reach and there was no Webmaster Radio Bash or anything to replace it.

Happily, there were invite events that I was fortunate enough to attend and the Castle as well as the Hilton Bars for getting together to talk about life and all things SEO, SEM and Social Media. Now does that mean it was a bad conference or that I felt is had no value? Definitely not. I just feel that the lack of focus on SEO and open networking events definitely detracted from SES and so was not as exciting an event as last year, where social events abound along with new nuggets at most every session.

The Donger Need Food!

Ok, so maybe I am showing my age here, but that eighties "Sixteen Candles" reference pretty much says it all and then some!

The first day was the usual. Fast paced, lots of hellos and card swapping, socializing with old friends, meeting new people and of course "networking events". Of course networking is code for - There will be a lot of alcohol and usually without time for food. Which was the case here as well. Unfortunately, to protect the guilty umm I mean innocent those happenings will be left as memories in our minds and not shared in the blogosphere. As we say in Las Vegas, "What Happens Here, Stays Here!". It is our code.

I see articles like this one and it saddens me http://www.jboye.com/blogpost/forget-about-accessibility-in-2009/. The writer is not wrong, as I am sure the arguments he suggests are ones that are brought up in board rooms and legal departments everyday, however it saddens me to think that we need government to make people do the right things. However, I know businesses will rarely choose something only because it is the right thing, so let me tell you why it is the smart thing.

I was talking to a friend this week and he mentioned that he had been talking to someone about being an SES newbie, or virgin so to speak. He remembered that my first year, I had a kind of list of things I learned and thought maybe I should share it to help make the experience easier for new attendees.

So, since SES NY is just around the corner, I thought I would do so today. Mind you this is all just my opinion, but it is what I have learned about SES conferences over the past three years. Hopefully, if it is your first conference, it will help you not feel like you just started your first day of high school. Because I know my first time, felt like that, just like that. Did I mention I was a geek and not in a cool way, in high school ;)?

In fact, if it weren't for my friend who suggested this article, I might have just put my head under the covers and hid away. However, he was my first conference friend and somehow that makes the rest so much easier.
So new to SES NY? Here is what I learned.
